Photologue | Second Time Around, 2009 Asian Art Biennial

Located in Taichung, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is a museum with a strong emphasis on exhibitions showing the progression of Taiwanese art. Seeing the urgency for Taiwan to join Asian contemporary art discourse, ex-museum director, Ava Hsueh, launched the inaugural Asian Art Biennial in 2007. In my opinion, if the Taipei Biennial is Taiwan’s strategy to engage in dialogue with the West, then the Asian Art Biennial is the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts’ effort to converse with greater Asia.

Curator Tsai Chao-yi, head of the museum’s exhibitions department, chooses ‘Viewpoints and Viewing Points’, the expansive yet unassuming theme, to continue discussions on contemporaneity in Asia. The 2009 Asian Art Biennial presents works by fifty-six artists, art groups and film directors from twenty Asian-Pacific countries.
