Publication of the centerpiece of the FotoFest 2014 Biennial 'View from Inside'. The exhibition was held in various locations at FotoFest, Houston from March to April 2014.

'As indicated by the title and subtitle, View from Inside, Contemporary Arab Photography, Video and Mixed Media Art, this book, and the exhibition that accompanies it, focuses on work by Arab artists. The term Arab is itself elusive and often described as pan-ethnic, linked primarily by language, but also, arguably, by certain shared political and cultural experiences in the years from post-World War I to the present.

These events and the cultural changes they have helped generate did not pre-determine the curatorial criteria for the selection of the artists and artworks in this project, but it is clear that they have been a strong influence on the creative lives of these artists and what they consider to be their important works. With irony and anger, their works address issues of power, loss, violence, gender, and the transformation of their social and physical environment.' - excerpt from the Introduction by Wendy Watriss

Karin Adrian von Roques, the lead curator of the accompanying exhibition, writes about certain examples of the artworks and themes in the book and exhibition. Two essays by Samer Mohdad and Claude W. Sui on the early history and development of photography in the Arab World are included. Mona Khazindar writes about modern Arab photography in the post World War II to the present. Selected works of 49 leading Arab artists from 13 countries in the region are showcased.
