By the end of the 1980s, Lee Bul received increasing attention by her performances exposing physiology and body of women and three dimensional works with gaudy, artificial, and kitschy decorativeness. Her works, made of a variety of materials and themes such as raw fish, gigantic balloon, female type cyborg, and karaoke box, gained higher recognition in the West from the mid-1990s onwards. Lee continues to explore the issues of feminism, popular culture and artistic practice through the 'Monsters' and 'Cyborgs' presented here. Artist biography and a selected bibliography are provided. With a foreword by Yasunaga Koichi, director of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum.
