Artist-in-residence:
Pak Sheung Cheun

This is the second of an annual local residency program initiated by AAA in 2007 with curator-in-residence Jaspar Lau Kin-wah's "HistoriCITY – Art Historical Writing in and on Hong Kong". The goal of the residency is to encourage new readings of the physical material in the archive, to offer individuals the chance to work with material outside their usual comfort zones, and to support and help realise interesting ideas and projects that come about from the time spent at AAA.

Born in 1977 in Fujian and having immigrated to Hong Kong in 1984, Pak Sheung Chuen is a young conceptual and performance artist. Pak graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2002 with a major in fine arts and a minor in theology. His works have been exhibited widely to include The 3rd Yokohama Triennial (2008), The 3rd Guangzhou Triennial (2008), ‘China Power Station: Part 2’, Astrup Fearnnley Museum, Oslo (2007), The 6th Busan Biennial (2006), ‘Yellow Box Art Project’, Shanghai (2006), ‘Artysta z Hong Kong’, Warsaw (2006) and Inward Gazes – Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art’ Macao Museum of Art (2005). In 2006, he was awarded the Lee Hysan Foundation Fellowship of Asian Cultural Council and joined ISCP residency program in New York.

During his residency, he has developed a work, White Library/A Mind Reaching for Emptiness. "A blank page is a pause of time in reading. It could also be readable, offering infinite imagination. A blank page creates a common link between different books, giving us a vision of the whole. During my residency at Asia Art Archive, I photocopied all the blank pages from its collection, attempting to create an alternative to the archive’s collection. I selected one hundred pieces of photocopied blank pages, and combined it with an introduction to the artwork, creating an artwork." Tozer Pak
