Wu Shanzhuan: Red Humour International In collaboration with Inga Svala Thorsdottir

Asia Art Archive's first extensive research and publication project, a bilingual monograph on Chinese artist, Wu Shanzhuan was published in July 2007. Born in Zhoushan, China in 1960, Wu Shanzhuan's work spans over 20 years and includes paintings, installations, performances, photography and drawings. Calling his work “Red Humour”, Wu Shanzhuan began in 1986 to create a visual world of slogans and illustrated texts that parodied the Cultural Revolution.

From 2003 - 2005, Jaspar Lau Kin-wah, Project Editor and Susan Acret, Project Manager, worked closely with Wu Shanzhuan to select content for the publication from a prolific body of raw and unpublished material donated to AAA by the artist. Designed by Ou Ning, the publication includes commissioned texts by Jaspar Lau Kin-wah, Gao Minglu, Ursula Panhans-Buhler, Qiu Zhijie, Gao Shiming, an interview with the artists by Martina Koppel-Yang, a foreword by Norman Bryson and unpublished works and writings by the artist. Special advisors to the project include Jane DeBevoise, Claire Hsu and Johnson Chang.

The book was launched at Lane Crawford on the 23rd July 2007 in Hong Kong. The book is available for sale from the AAA.
