Museum Practices in the 21st Century: A Cultural Exchange with MoMA

Due to the rapid growth of museums across Asia in the 1990s, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the AAA and the Asian Cultural Council jointly presented a conference entitled 'Museum Practices in the 21st Century: A Cultural Exchange with MoMA' from 14 to 18 November 2002 in Hong Kong. This conference explored and examined the complexity of contemporary museum practices, particularly where they connect with curating, collecting, audience development and education. A forum was provided for the discussion of issues raised by the presentation and to explore curatorial practices in the United States and Asia.

This conference included a four-day workshop for museum professionals and four public lectures. Curators and educators from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and museum professionals from Asia and Hong Kong led the workshop sessions. Topics ranged from curatorial development of exhibitions and collections to museum education and public outreach. Additional sessions saw the discussion of marketing and fundraising. The invite-only workshop was intended as an intensive study for a small group of professional participants. The four public lectures took place at the Hong Kong Arts Centre and the University of Hong Kong. Issues of new curatorial approaches to modern and contemporary art were addressed in the lectures. Participants from Australia, China, Philippines, Singapore and Hong Kong made presentations on their institutions and on curatorial practices in their respective countries.
