Asia Art Archive welcomes Hong Kong Art Research Initiative (HKARI) as our researchers-in-residence.

For their residency, HKARI activates the Ha Bik Chuen Archive as a resource that informs discussions and workshops of “Talkover/Handover 2.0,” a project responding to the twentieth anniversary of Hong Kong’s Handover from British colonial rule to Chinese sovereignty. Following its first edition in 2007, “Talkover/Handover 2.0” continues to generate critical dialogue and creative work to review changes in Hong Kong’s social and cultural landscape since 1997. After an open call for discussion topics and project ideas, “Talkover/Handover 2.0” will organise a series of artist-led public discussions in spring 2017 and an exhibition at 1a space in June/July 2017, followed by further research on art in post-Handover Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Art Research Initiative (HKARI), established in 2016, aims to experiment and develop new research methodologies to study Hong Kong art within its cultural context. Apart from their own research and projects, the group collaborates with institutions and organisations to promote research on Hong Kong art and art history writing. HKARI core members include Evelyn Char, Clara Cheung, Cheung Yung, and wen yau.

HKARI’s residency is part of The Ha Bik Chuen Archive Project (2016–2019), generously supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Residencies and fellowships under the The Ha Bik Chuen Archive Project aim to catalyse new ideas and knowledge by opening up, activating, and circulating materials from the Ha Bik Chuen Archive. Practitioners in artistic production, exhibition-making, and curatorial and art historical research are welcome to apply. For more details, please email research@aaa.org.hk.
