Exhibitions are where artworks meet their publics. In the context of Asia, however, in the absence of systematic public collections and substantial academic art history departments dedicated to 20th and 21st century art from the region, exhibitions have become the primary sites of art historical construction.
The symposium ‘Sites of Construction: Exhibitions and the Making of Recent Art History in Asia’, held from 21 to 23 October 2013, is part of Asia Art Archive’s long-term inquiry into the implication of this phenomenon. The three-day symposium explores the multiple roles exhibitions play through the participation of international scholars, curators, writers, and artists.
As a prelude to the symposium, Picks from the Collection presents a selection of exhibition catalogues and other relevant material, the majority of which will be used as case studies by speakers in their symposium presentations.
