Title: Kawamata Project on Roosevelt Island
: Claudia GOULD, Tadashi KAWAMATA(川俣正), Elizabeth A. FROSCH, Yve-Alain BOIS, Kostas GOUNIS
Description: An unusual site-specific installation project of monumental scale located at the ruins of the former Small Pox Hospital on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island, involving many participants, organisations, supporters and contractors. The Kawamata Project on Roosevelt Island (July 15-December 1, 1992) was conceived and organized by Claudia Gould (Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia) who invited Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata to the project along with a project team: Mika Koike, Elizabeth O'Donnell, Jane Gregory Rubin and Andrea Schwan from the USA. Gould wanted a landmark installation piece to stand as "an ironic, crumbling counterface to some of the world's most spectacular real estate", the dominating skyline of Manhattan which stands opposite the island. The project team are members of 'on the table, inc.' (NY), "an organisation formed to create the installation at the Small Pox Hospital, the publication, partial filming of a MICA TV video, and the exhibition/installation of concepts and models October 13-November 6, 1992 at The Arthur A. Houghton Jr. Gallery of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art." The installation involved 'extending' the Small Pox Hospital with an external armature without altering, touching or impacting the original architectural structure. Includes planning sketches with essays by Gould, Elizabeth A. Frosch, Yve-Alain Bois and Kostas Gounis, and a detailed chronology on the artist.
