Press Release
Erasure is a commission by the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF), Sydney, Australia, co-curated by Zoe Butt, Director and Curator of San Art, Vietnam and proudly supported by Nicholas and Angela Curtis, Sydney, Australia.

On December 15, 2010 Dinh Q Lê came upon amateur video footage online that captured the tragedy of a refugee boat as it crashed against the rocks of Christmas Island. He was immediately struck by how connected he felt to this scene.  He was compelled by this incident and the violent history of repetition in the millions of people who have moved and continue to suffer in silence across the world’s controlled borders in search of freedom. As a child who made a similar journey himself, Lê pondered his own art making as complex articulations of how this struggle is given relevance in contemporary society. ‘Erasure’ attempts to distill the long history of immigration, from the past to the present, from Australia to Vietnam and now in Hong Kong having a particular significance to highlight the commonality of the human condition.  Within this installation the idea and role of the archive as a powerful, yet contentious system of categorizing and remembering history is particularly called into question.

The thousands and thousands of abandoned photographs in this exhibition depict the lives of Southern Vietnamese people before their sudden departure as refugees of the Vietnam War.  You are invited to pick up these downturned photographs, to contribute to the archiving of this project by scanning these images with your own comments on a dedicated website: www.erasurearchive.net
